Mount Helix neighborhood, La Mesa, California
Rehabilitation of existing 1954 mid-century vernacular residence, inspired by period Architect Lloyd Ruocco.
While the building envelope and general footprint remained unchanged, the existing interior was mostly demolished and rebuilt, greatly improving the flow in this 2,800 sf home. All amenities, like primary bedroom, bathrooms and kitchen, were brought up to contemporary standards. Windows and sunroom glass enclosure were replaced in kind (to match existing) with glass conforming to contemporary safety and energy values.
Floor to ceiling windows and glass sliding doors form most of the exterior wall, this openness can be fully enjoyed, privacy is of little concern on this 20,000 sf lot. Large roof overhangs and new automated shades protect from the sun when needed.
Existing wood ceilings, wood wall paneling and light soffits were preserved and restored, light colored walls and flooring keep the palate minimal while brightening up the interior.
